$2 dollar show down

Frank and I switch out on the grocery shopping.

When Frank goes he does a pretty good job. I certainly appreciate not having to do the "grocery beating" as Kathy terms it.

However, when does Frank go...he spends more than I would. When I go to the store, I return with all of the off brand, white labeled, ghetto products. You see, something about me you may not know is that I love to save money at the grocery store. I guy off brand, I don't splurge...I even look at the unit per price. You know, you can see if something is really bulk because it will say 15.1 cents per unit or 23.3 cents and such. I used to hold on to my Savings Card til the end so I could see the pennies and nickles reduce my grocery bill but Frank made me stop because he said it was embarrassing.

This brings me to yesterday.

I went to the grocery store for the basics. (lunch stuff, veggies, diapers, ect.) Now when I say basics, I mean reaaallllly basic. No extras.

Now, Kroger has 2 types of store brands, which is why I like it...the "Premium Select" and the "Value Brand". PS is better than VB but VB is way cheaper than any other product. So I, of course, buy the Value Brand! My cart is only white bags with blue and red font writing.....classy.

I only purchase name brands for 2 things...Doritos and sliced cheese. Have you ever tasted off brand cheese triangled chips? They leave a odd film on your tongue. And off brand cheese? I don't have enough blog space to cover the wierdness that must be used to create fake cheese.

Anyway, I digress.

During my trip, I decided to really splurge and purchase some lotion for myself (Suave lotion because I've been using the girl's baby lotion). My "splurge" was actually encouraged by a price tag. I could buy 2 bottles of lotion for $3.09 a piece and get a an immediate $2 off. So I think... "hmmmm 2 x $3.09 is $5.18 minus $2.00. Now that is a pretty good deal!"

So I trot my happy, money saving self to the cash register. My purchases go through and I proudly point out to the young lady that it should reflect $2.00 off. It doesn't. Hmm. So we wait to see if it is going to reflect on the coupons afterwards. It doesn't. Hmm. The cashier didn't know what to do so I thanked her and moved on.

But I didn't leave....I went right to the manager. I explained the whole thing with a little bit of an apology. He checks the lotion and agrees that I should, in fact, of recieved the $2.00. I show him the reciept and the coupons. I'm still kind of apologizing at this point again. Because by now, even though I love saving money, I'm feeling a little dumb going on and on about $2.00. I mean, where is the line? $1....$5.....$10?? It adds up!

But to my sheer joy and happiness.....the manager told me it was no problem, took me over to the customer service desk and I recieved 2 crisp 1 dollar bills!

Victory for the penny pinchers of the world!

Are you sure we're not related?! As I Wisconsinite, I cannot condone buying store brand cheese. When I first started buying store brands, I went after 11:00 pm so no one would see me. But then I realized how much I was saving and started going in the light of day.

(We don't buy store brand mayo. That ain't right.)

I'm one step away from shopping Aldi for everything. Then I'd be able to send the kids to college just by cutting our grocery budget by 80%. But then I would be shopping at Aldi. I'm not there yet.
