I went to Mexia on Tuesday afternoon for the scholarship assembly at Mexia High School. The assembly was on Wednesday, but I go early. My mom cooks my birthday dinner for me and dad and I drink wine together. It is an awesome way to celebrate my birthday. It is also a nice way for me to relax before I attend the assembly.
Every year, 25 - 30 local organizations, families, business, colleges and universities give scholarships to Mexia High School graduates. I present a scholarship on behalf of my family. It is the Michael Nutt "Good Guy" scholarship. Instead of trying explain what the scholarship is to everyone, I would like to just submit to you, my reading fans, what I read at the assembly.
"Good Morning, my name is Jennifer Nutt-Sullivan.
I am here today to present the Michael Nutt Good Guy Scholarship in memory of my brother, a 1992 Mexia High School graduate. Although Michael’s battle with cancer ended in 2004, his Good Guy legacy lives on. This annual scholarship is given to recipients that our family believes exemplify the traits that my brother possessed.
Michael was truly a Good Guy. He believed in doing the right thing. He believed in finishing the job he began and not doing anything half way. He stood for what he believed was right. He was a friend to so many different people and could be counted on in times of adversity. Michael always put his heart and soul into all that he did. Whether it was in band, UIL Academics, golf, or the classroom he gave 100%.
Our scholarship recipients for 2006 are Brooke Simmons and Joey Rogers. Both Brooke and Joey personify the Good Guy ideals that Michael and our family hold so dear.
They both knew Michael personally and have shown the positive influence he had on their lives. We feel they represent all of the qualities that should be found in a Good Guy. We know as Brooke attends the University of Texas and Joey attends Sam Houston State University, they will make our family proud.
It’s not always easy to be the Good Guy. Thank you for allowing us to honor you and Michael with these scholarships. It is with pride that I present to you both a scholarship in the amount of $750 each."
